2001-2015 New Millennium
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 ushered Civil Air Patrol into a new era of homeland defense. CAP provided officials with the first high-resolution images of the World Trade Center site, airlifted blood and medical supplies, and provided communication and transportation support. Increased federal funding and creation of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security helped CAP acquire new technologies, including hypersprectal imaging, forward-looking infrared systems, and GPS-equipped glass cockpit avionics.
During this time, after millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett and his airplane went missing in Nevada on September 3, 2007, it was the Nevada Wing that led the search for him. Read about it here.
