Maj. Billy Edwards Memorial Flight Scholarship
In 2020, friends and family of the late Maj. Billy Edwards established a memorial flight scholarship to honor him and his lifelong commitment to Civil Air Patrol cadet programs. The privately funded scholarship is made available to highly qualified Nevada Wing cadets each year. Cadets at least 15 years old in the grade of C/MSgt or higher can apply for this scholarship in January by submitting a resume, letters of recommendation, school transcripts and attending an interview with the committee members. Successful cadets who earn their solo wings are then expected to apply for the CAP National Cadet Wings Program in order to finish their training toward a private pilot certificate.
Major Edwards was a staunch supporter of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program. A former C/Lt Col (pre-Eaker) from Ohio Wing, he moved to Las Vegas in the late 1970’s while serving in the United States Air Force. He continued his support of Civil Air Patrol by joining the Clark County Composite Squadron. Over the years, Major Edwards held many positions in Nevada Wing. He served as a squadron commander, Wing Director of Cadet Programs, and served as Cadet Encampment Commander for five years. As a Command Pilot, Mission Pilot, and a member of Green Flag, Major Edwards was awarded Nevada Wing Pilot of the Year twice.
Major Edwards family and friends hope to pass on his passion for flying, and support for Civil Air Patrol, by awarding the scholarshipannually to the most deserving Nevada Wing cadet. The awardees receive funds to solo in a CAP aircraft, $250 towards an aviation headset, and their FAA Medical certificate expenses.
Scholarship application opens in January 2023, awards announced in February. Watch this space...
