Promote Safety as a Core Value for Yourself, Your Family as Well as Others!

By Lt. Col. Mohammed High, CAP

As the Holiday Season approaches, I would like to send a friendly reminder to everyone to be vigilant in looking after the safety of you and your family as well as your fellow comrades.

Keep your mind in the basics of satety: think ahead, if you plan on attending holiday parties where alcohol will be served, have a plan to avoid drinking and driving, or getting into a vehicle with someone who has been drinking. This may include appointing a designated driver, handing your keys to the host, or abstaining from drinking when you know you will be driving.

If you are planning on traveling during the holidays, think your travel plans through; account for plenty of rest and changing of weather conditions. Take your time while driving, wear your seatbelts and watch your speed. Be prepared for possible break- down by keeping a winter safety kit in your car.

This time of year might be difficult for fellow comrades, keep eyes open for nonverbal signs that might be communicating signs of distress. If they are, please don't leave them alone. Have the courage to help and to ask for help if needed. After all helping is part of what CAP is all about.

Don't forget! Operational Risk Management is essential to preventing mishaps at home or while traveling during the holidays.

Have a joyous holiday season celebrating the things important to you and your families, look out for yourselves and each other.

l am honored to serve with you and I look forward to seeing you in 2018.
