Lt. Col. Doris L North 60 Years of Service

Lt. Col. Doris L. North was recently awarded the 60-year membership clasp, Doris joined Civil Air Patrol on February 26, 1958 and is currently the longest service Civil Air Patrol member of the Nevada Wing. She was recently recognized for her service at the Nevada Wing Conference in Elko, Nevada.

Doris joined the Clark County Composite Squadron (27031) at the urging of her sorority sister, Kitty Rodman, to help her with the paperwork. She enthusiastically joined not knowing this would be a life long adventure. Soon after joining C.A.P. she went to an Encampment dinner and was introduced to Lt. Col. Harry C. North, whom she had a whirlwind courtship and then married on February 14, 1960. They have three children: Steven North, Karen Edwards and Jeanne Murphy. Steven was a senior member, observer, obtaining the rank of Major until married life led him into other endeavors. Karen wanted nothing to do with C.A.P. but then ended up marrying Maj. Billy R. Edwards and thus became a member by proxy who plays a supporting role to Bill's C.A.P. service. Jeanne joined as a cadet, obtained the Earhart Award, participated in I.A.C.E. and then went on to become a senior member until she married Michael Murphy and then her career and life led her away from C.A.P.

Doris has maintained a very active role in C.A.P. since joining in 1958, some of her accomplishments and positions held are:

Deputy Nevada Wing Commander

Grover Loening Aerospace Award 1989

National Commanders Unit Citation Award

Nevada Outstanding Commander 1988, 1990, 1991

Nevada Wing Commanders commendation 5 times

Air Force Association Member of the year 1991

National Senior Member of the Year 1991

Frank Brewer Aerospace Award 1994

Has been Emergency Services qualified since 1962 and has participated in over 423 missions. 

Doris is still active and tries to attend as many C.A.P. functions as possible, she resides with Karen and Billy Edwards in Las Vegas and continues to support the Civil Air Patrol Mission.
