Commander's Corner

By Lt. Col. Deborah Pierce, CAP
Nevada Wing Commander

Hi there, everybody! Well, here we are in the thick of winter - snow up here is the North and rain down in the South. But just because its winter doesn't mean that nothing is going on! We have some great things coming up in the Wing over the next couple of months that I'd like to tell you about.

A couple of our squadrons are embarking on winter camping trips, practicing their outdoor survival skills. Many of our members applied for NCSAs this year and that's great to see! Those folks are waiting with bated breath to find out the status of their applications. Speaking of NCSAs...there were 24 cadets selected Nationwide this year for the Cadet Leadership Academy NCSA. I'm very pleased to announce - drum roll, please - two of our own Nevada Wing cadets were chosen! Cadet Capt. Kyle Alamshaw of the Las Vegas Composite Squadron and Cadet Capt. Jason Scharoun of the Reno Composite Squadron will be representing us in Legislative Day meetings with Nevada's Congressional delegation in Washington, D.C. at the end of February. I believe it's the first time in a long time that Nevada has our own cadets in there annual meetings. Very exciting! Maj. Rich Hazeltine and I will be accompanying the cadets at the Legislative Day meetings as we'll be there for the Command Council meetings held during the same week.

Another big event for Nevada Wing is the 2020 Nevada Wing Encampment. The dates have been selected and will be June 19-June 27, 2020, at the Rising Star in Mesquite, NV. More specific information will be coming but I wanted to announce those dates so they can be penciled in for YOUR participation - seniors and cadets, North and South! The Encampment Commander is Lt. Col. Pete Goertzen and the Commandant of Cadets is Lt. Col. Dan Wilcox. Thanks to these two members for stepping up to the plate to take this important project on. Seniors, if you would like to be part of it, please contact Lt. Col. Goertzen. Cadets, more information will be coming as to how you can apply.

Folks, please submit articles to Silver Wings regrading what's going on the YOUR squadron! Squadron website managers, please be working on updating your sites to the NHQ standard and keeping the information current. If you have questions about your site format, place contact Capt. maryan Tooker, Nevada Wing Director of Public Affairs. Let the Wing - and visiting potential members - know what's happening where you are.

Spring will be along in just a couple of months, when those up North can stop shoveling snow and the members down South can put their SCUBA suits away. In the meantime, please enjoy winter as much as you can and thank you all for what you do to enhance the success of our Nevada Wing!
